Vol. 26 No. 11

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - FAWANS (DONEGAL) NEW ROAD.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether any decision has been reached regarding the construction of a new road from the main road (Letterkenny to Dunfanaghy) at Fawans to the main road at Currin; and whether, in view of the poverty of the district and of the benefit to be derived by a large number of occupiers in the adjoining townlands, he is now prepared to assent to the petition lodged with the Land Commission towards the end of 1927.

The Land Commission are not prepared to incur the expenditure which the proposed road would entail, as in their opinion the benefits to be derived from the construction of such a road would not justify the expenditure and, in any event, it would appear to be a matter for the local authority.

The proposed road would connect two existing county roads and would, it is estimated, cost £400, including the construction of a bridge 16 to 20 feet span, and, in addition, would necessitate the provision of a new level crossing over the railway and a gatekeeper's lodge. There are already three level crossings with gatekeepers' lodges on 1¼ miles of the railway at this place, and it would not be reasonable to expect the company to provide a fourth crossing and keeper's house on the same length of line. The county road bridge is only 30 chains lower down, and the distance of the proposed new route is less than half a mile shorter (say, ten minutes' walk) than by the existing county roads.
