Vol. 29 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Charge Against Gárda Sergeant.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he proposes to institute an inquiry into the conduct of a sergeant of the Gárda Síochána, stationed at Clashmore, Co Waterford, who, according to the evidence given before the District Justice of Waterford, was, on the night of February 28th, under the influence of drink and visited the house of Mr. and Miss Torpey, in the village of Clashmore, where he used abusive and insulting language towards a farmer named Mr. Hugh McGrath, of Ballyheeny, Clashmore.

Mr. McGrath mentioned in the Deputy's question issued a summons against the sergeant complaining that the sergeant used abusive and threatening language and challenged complainant to fight. The charge was very fully investigated before the District Court and after a full hearing was dismissed. On the termination of the criminal proceedings the customary disciplinary investigations were set on foot and are at present proceeding.

Is an inquiry proceeding at present?

Yes. It started some time ago.

Will the result be open to publication?

The Deputy can put a question if he likes after the result.
