Vol. 29 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Invalid Cars.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that a Customs duty is imposed on invalid cars imported into the Saorstát; whether it was his original intention to include these articles as furniture, and, if not, and having regard to the fact that these cars are not manufactured in the Saorstát or are not likely to be in the immediate future, he will include a provision in the forthcoming Finance Bill exempting invalid cars from such duty.

Cars and kindred articles, proper as such to the use of invalids, are not charged with duty as furniture on importation. The necessity for action, as suggested in the Deputy's question, therefore, does not arise,

Arising out of the answer, when was that duty taken off, because I can assure the Minister that three years ago that duty was on?

I cannot answer that. I only know that such things as invalid carriages, bath chairs, hand propelled chairs, wheeled coaches, spinal carriages and carrying chairs are not liable.

Could the Minister say if they ever were liable?

I could not.
