Vol. 29 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage to Wicklow Foreshore.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that much damage is being done by the action of the sea to the foreshore at Wicklow and that valuable property is in danger as a result of such coast erosion, and if he will indicate what steps it is proposed to take, either separately or in conjunction with the local council, to avert further damage by the sea to property.

The question of coast erosion generally is receiving careful consideration at present. It appears unlikely, however, that any remedy can be proposed other than the usual sea defence works which should be undertaken by owners of property likely to be injured by erosion.

Is the Minister aware that the local council is not in a position, without getting some assistance, to proceed with the protection, and that, if something is not done very soon, damage to the amount of £40,000 will be caused by the washing away of the houses? I should like to know if the Executive Council has considered the question of coast erosion.

I cannot add anything at present to my answer.
