Vol. 30 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish School-Books in National Schools.

Pádraig O hOgáin

(An Clár) asked the Minister for Education if he will state what books in Irish are sanctioned for use in the first, second, and third standards respectively (a) in National Schools in the Gaeltacht, and (b) in National Schools in the Gaeltacht other than Schools in which the work is done through the medium of Irish.

A pamphlet containing a list of books sanctioned for use in the several standards in National Schools is published by my Department and I am supplying the Deputy with a copy. The books in Irish approved for use in the first, second and third standards are given on pages 9, 10 and 11 of the pamphlet. A supplementary list of books approved for use in National Schools is at present in preparation.

Managers and teachers are free to choose the books for use in schools from the sanctioned list.

By whom was that supplementary list, or is it text, prepared?

By a Committee of the Department.

Is it a list or a text?

A list. This is a catalogue of books that the Deputy referred to.
