Vol. 30 No. 11

In Committee on Finance. - Intoxicating Liquor (Amendment) Bill, 1929 (Seanad)—Final Stages.

When the Bill was previously before the House, Deputy de Valera raised the point as to the extent of the Dublin Metropolitan area. Somewhere about the year 1836, I think, the first Act was passed specifying what was called the Dublin Police District. That Act with subsequent amendments— I think the 1 and 2 Vic.—extended the district as far as eight miles from Her Majesty's castle in Dublin on one side to the bridge over the river called Anna Liffey in Chapelizod on the other. There must have been subsequent extensions under the Boundaries Act of 1900. Shortly, what really comprise the area described as the Dublin Metropolitan Area in this Bill, are the six divisions of what was formerly known as the Dublin Metropolitan Police Divisions —A, B, C, D, E and F. They extend as far as Dollymount on the north side to Killiney on the south side, and as far as the bridge over the Liffey in Chapelizod on the west side. I expect that that explanation is satisfactory to Deputy Lemass.

I thank you for the information.

Bill received for final consideration and passed.
