Vol. 31 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salmon Fishing in Galway Bay.

Tomás Mac Giolla Phóil

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is aware that drift-net fishing for salmon is prohibited in Galway Bay by a by-law of the conservators, passed in 1913, although protested against on behalf of the fishermen by Mr. John Niland, and whether, in view of the large number of fishermen affected, and the fact that the by-law is of comparatively recent date, he will take steps to have the fishing rights restored to the fishermen who are anxious to drift-net fish for salmon in the bay.

The by-law in question prohibiting drift-netting for salmon between Cloghmore Point and Black Head was made after public inquiry for the purpose of preserving the stock of salmon in the rivers flowing into Galway Bay, and I am not, in these circumstances, prepared to repeal it.
