Vol. 32 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cullens, Co. Sligo, Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he can state when the Land Commission propose vesting the estate of Sir Robert Palmer (C.D.B.), Culleens, County Sligo, and what arrangements are being made with a view to providing additional land for the tenants on that estate in lieu of the grazing rights on the Ox Mountains which they agreed to give up in consideration of the promise of the Land Commission inspector to provide such additional land.

The estate of Sir Robert Palmer was not vested in the Land Commission until the 29th March, 1923, and the resale of the estate is being dealt with as quickly as circumstances permit.

The Land Commission is not making any arrangements to provide additional lands for the tenants referred to, as the grazing rights on the mountain lands on the townlands of Caltragh and Tawnalaghta, apparently those referred to by the Deputy as the Ox Mountains, are not being surrendered by the tenants concerned. There is no record of any promise having been made by or on behalf of the Land Commission in the matter.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that a considerable hardship is imposed on tenants in adjoining estates, due to the delay of the Land Commission in vesting the Palmer Estate, and in providing these tenants with the bog which they were promised thereon?

The tenants have got the bog and the grazing on the bog as well.

The tenants on the outside estates?

All the tenants in that area who required turbary rights.

Am I to understand that all the bog on the Palmer Estate has been subdivided among the tenants?

All that is necessary for the use of the tenants.

All that is going to be distributed has been distributed.

I am not quite sure of that, but all that is required by the tenants on this particular estate, and by adjoining tenants as well, has been divided. I am sure there is a larger acreage of bog than is necessary for the use of the tenants on this and on adjoining estates.

Will the Land Commission see that what remains is distributed?

What is the use of distributing it if it is not required?

My information is that it is urgently required.

It is being grazed on at the moment by the tenants interested.
