Vol. 32 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - Wounds and Arrest.

asked the Minister for Justice if he can state whether the wounds inflicted on George Gilmore on Sunday, November 10th, happened while he was in police custody; (a) and further, whether George Gilmore was suffering from any wounds at the time of his arrest in Harcourt Street; (b) what wounds he was suffering from when received in Kevin Street Station.

The matter of George Gilmore's detention on Sunday, November 10th, was the subject of the adjournment debate on the 27th ultimo, and I have nothing to add to what I said on that occasion.

My purpose in putting this question down was because the Minister had made no inquiries to verify or contradict the statement which I made previously. I put the question down the second time so that the Minister could take the trouble of trying to verify the accuracy of the charges made against the C.I.D. in this case. I would like to know if the Minister would be prepared to answer this question if I put it down again?

I have answered the question already.

What is the answer?

The Minister refuses to give an answer to this question.

I have already answered it, as the Deputy would know if he had listened to what I said.

I contend that the substance of this question was not answered by the Minister on the adjournment debate. I would ask for an answer now. If the Minister would tell me where he did refer to it on the adjournment debate I would be satisfied.

The Deputy put his case on the adjournment debate as strongly as he possibly could. I then dealt with it, and I do not propose to deal with it further.

Will the Minister state whether George Gilmore was suffering from any wounds at the time of his arrest in Harcourt Street and, if so, what wounds he was suffering from when in Kevin Street? The Minister never made any statement on that, either here or outside.

Was the Deputy here for the adjournment debate?

Then the Deputy should know that there was a medical certificate that he was suffering from two small incised wounds on his head, in other words, from two scratches.

A medical certificate was produced to show that he was suffering from these when he was let out of the barracks. Was he suffering from them before he went in, and, if not, how did he get them?

He was not medically examined before he went in.

I can definitely state that he was beaten by the Guards, and this is the result of it.
