Public Business. - Wild Birds Protection Bill, 1929— Fifth Stage.
I would like to make a protest against this Bill being passed. I contend that the time of this House should not be wasted in discussing a Bill of this sort while we have so many pressing problems such as unemployment, housing, town tenants, pensions for widows and orphans, and, last but not least, the traffic problem, in regard to which the Minister has not introduced a Bill to prevent the wealthy classes in this country in their motor cars riding rough-shod over people and murdering them. I would like to say with regard to the close season for wild birds that I am in favour of it, but there are certain sections in the Bill which will deprive a certain class of poor people of their means of livelihood. In view of the fact that we have thousands of unemployed and that we are now going to add to the list, I appeal to Deputies to exercise their commonsense and to reject this Bill.
