Vol. 35 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Registration.

asked the Minister for Justice (1) whether he is aware that within recent months there has been unusual delay in the Central Office of the Land Registry in registering the titles of tenant purchasers to their holdings purchased under the Land Purchase Acts and in completing the registration of dealings with registered lands; (2) to state the number of cases awaiting first registration (a) excluding cases arising under the Land Act, 1923, (b) including cases arising under the Land Act, 1923, (c) the number of dealings with registered land awaiting completion; (3) the cause of the unusual delay, and whether any assurance can be given that steps will be taken within a reasonable time that the work of the Central Office of the Land Registry will be expedited so that the public may be protected in dealing with the titles to such lands.

The figures asked for are as follow:—(a) 5,943, (b) 7,736, (c) 2,660. The delay in so far as it is abnormal has been caused by the non-filling of certain vacancies in the staff pending the putting into force of a complete scheme of reorganisation. This scheme is now ready, and will be put into operation at an early date, whereupon it is anticipated that the work of the office will proceed with due speed.
