Vol. 36 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Unemployment Benefit.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why it is that applicants for unemployment benefit have six waiting days instead of three as formerly, and if he is aware that the extended period of waiting is an unnecessary hardship upon those seeking benefit.

Except for the short period between 8th November, 1920, and 30th June, 1921, applicants for unemployment benefit have been subject to an initial waiting period of six days ever since the first establishment of unemployment insurance eighteen years ago. Any hardship which the waiting period may cause is not unnecessary, because the finance of the scheme is based on six days, and would have to be altered in essential particulars if that period were reduced.
