Vol. 36 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compounded Arrears of Rent.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is aware (a) that the Irish Land Commission are now adding to the purchase price under the Land Act, 1923, amounts in excess of the compounded arrears of rent, and (b) that this excess is even being added in respect of persons who had paid their landlords up to the passing of the Land Act, 1923, leaving no hanging gale.

The Deputy appears to be under a misapprehension. No amounts in excess of the compounded arrears of rent properly due and payable by the tenant are added by the Land Commission to the standard price of holdings purchased under the Land Acts, 1923-9, and in every case the addition of compounded arrears of rent is made only after due notice to the tenants concerned, who are thus given an opportunity of objecting to the amounts proposed to be added if they disagree with the amounts returned by the owner.
