Vol. 36 No. 7

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment on Roads.

Mr. Sheehy

(Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state whether it is the policy of his Department to give ex-British soldiers and ex-National Army men preference as regards employment on roads; and whether he has given directions to county surveyors to employ such men in preference to experienced road workers.

County surveyors have instructions that preference is to be given to suitable demobilised men of the National Army when selecting men for employment on road work financed by grants.

Does the Minister say that no labourers except ex-servicemen are to be employed on the roads? Is preference to be given to ex-servicemen who are in receipt of pensions while men with families are to be left on the side of the road without work?

Will the Minister take steps to ensure that only supporters of Cumann na nGaedheal are asked to pay taxes?
