Vol. 36 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clahane (Co. Kerry) Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether, in view of the vesting of the estate of P. T. Foley, Clahane, County Kerry, he will state what arrangements have been made to secure for the tenants of this estate the grazing rights of the adjoining mountain and the rights of quarrying in this estate which they have heretofore enjoyed, and if anything has been done to secure the cleansing and maintenance of watercourses and embankments on this estate, and thereby prevent flooding.

The Deputy presumably refers to part of the lands of Clahane, coinprising about 982 acres of tenanted lands on the estate of P.T. Foley, in the occupation of Thomas O'Connor and Daniel Hanafin, held by them in equal undivided shares. The lands are subject to certain grazing and turbary rights and to the reservation to the Land Commission of the surplus turbary.

The Land Commission is not aware that any of the tenants has the right to quarry on this estate, and in August, 1929, informed the tenants' solicitor that they were not in a position to meet their wishes with regard to the division or allocation of certain existing rights to quarry on the estate.

As regards the cleansing and maintenance of watercourses and embankments, inquiry will be made as to the present position of the works.
