Vol. 36 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in Co. Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what progress has been made by the Irish Land Commission in acquiring for relief of congestion the lands of Treanacally, Hagfield, Charlestown, Co. Mayo.

As the Deputy has already been informed, the lands of Treanacally, or Hagfield, have been gazetted under the provisions of the Land Act, 1923, with a view to their acquisition. The proceedings are still in progress, but it is not possible at present to state when the lands will be acquired.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state whether any progress has been made in this matter since May of last year?

Scarcely any progress has been made since then.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state whether the delay is due to the owner or the Land Commission?

It would be unfair to say that the owner is responsible for the delay. Difficulties of various kinds have arisen, and at present it is impossible to say when the negotiations will reach a further stage.

Then are we to take it that no progress has been made since May of last year, the question is being shelved at the moment, and is not being dealt with at all?

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what progress has been made with the scheme of migration, vesting and estate improvement works on the V.A.T. Shean Carter Estate, Belmullet, County Mayo.

The estate referred to has not yet been inspected and, in view of the complexity of the matters to be dealt with, it is not possible at present to say when schemes for migration and rearrangement can be put in hand. No avoidable delay, however, will be incurred. Grants totalling £2,510 have been sanctioned since the beginning of 1929 for reclamation work, provision of out-offices for tenants, and improvement of roads, and the bulk of these grants has already been expended. In addition, the Land Commission are at present considering sanction of expenditure on further works on the estate.
