Vol. 36 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Imports into Kilrush.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the increase in the imports of flour into Kilrush during the present year; if he can state the effect of this increase on employment in the milling industry in the town; if he will state the measures which he has taken, or proposes to take, to provide alternative work for the disemployed millworkers.

I understand that imports of flour into Kilrush have increased, but there does not appear to have been any substantial effect on employment.

Is the Minister aware whether there has been any effect? Have any people lost their employment in Kilrush owing to the increased import of flour?

I am not aware. If I am to take the register figures—no.

Is the Minister aware that some of the men employed have to work short time?

I have had that verbally conveyed to me to-day, but I have not had anything more than the verbal statement.

Mr. Hogan

I can confirm it.
