Vol. 37 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Making of Footpaths in Leix.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the date upon which proposals for the making of footpaths in towns and villages in the County Leix were received by his Department from the Leix County Council; whether he has taken any steps to confirm the information supplied regarding the extent to which unemployment and distress exist in the areas concerned, and if he is now prepared to sanction the proposals referred to, or state what action, if any, he proposes to take in the matter.

Proposals for construction of footpaths were received from the Laoighis County Council on the 23rd December, 1930. The estimated cost of the works was £9,030. About the same time proposals were received from the Laoighis Board of Health and Public Assistance for public health works. The works proposed by the County Council and the Board of Health constituted too large a programme of works to be set in motion for the purpose of relieving unemployment and it was decided to give preference to public health works, in connection with which I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question bearing on these schemes.
