Vol. 37 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyhaunis Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if the facts concerning the farm known as "The Hundred Acres," Persse Estate, Cloonfad, Ballyhaunis (landlord, Mr. McDonagh, Dunmore), have been brought to the notice of the Land Commission by the tenants concerned, and, if so, whether it is intended to take immediate action in the matter.

The Deputy appears to refer to the holding of James McDonagh, comprising 228a. 3r. 34p. in the townland of Hundred Acres on the estate of B. W. Persse, which is the subject of proceedings under the Land Acts 1923-9. Representations have been made by a number of sub-tenants on this holding (who are returned on the schedule of particulars as joint sub-tenants under an agreement dated 18th Oct., 1920 in respect of 143a. 1r. 32p.) to have the lands divided, and they have been informed that when the estate is reached in its turn to be dealt with the question of the retention and resumption of this holding will be considered.

Mr. Boland

I would like to ask the Parliamentary Secretary does he not think that it is impossible for these sub-tenants to carry out the agreement they made in 1920 owing to the depressed conditions in agriculture at present. Is there not a strong case for speeding up this small job?

All these facts will be taken into consideration when the Land Commission is dealing with the resumption of this particular holding.
