Vol. 37 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dáil Loan Subscribers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware (a) that a list of Dáil Loan subscribers covering portion of the Muckross district, Killarney, was submitted in 1929 by Mr. Denis Hegarthy, Castlelough, Killarney; (b) that this man forwarded to Finance one block of a cheque for £60, also a cheque for £18, this total of £78 being the amount claimed in the list submitted by him; (c) and if the Minister will now give an assurance that there will be no further delay in refunding to the subscribers mentioned in Mr. Hegarthy's list the money subscribed to Dáil Loan (1920).

The list and receipts referred to by the Deputy have been received in my Department.

A number of applications for refund of subscriptions has been received from persons whose names are not included in the list furnished by Mr. Hegarthy; these persons allege that they paid their subscriptions to the collectors, who signed the affidavit which accompanied the list. The explanation furnished by Mr. Hegarthy regarding these subscriptions is not regarded as satisfactory, and further enquiries must be made before any decision can be come to.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state why a refund of £5 paid to the Dáil Loan by Laurence O'Reilly, Main Street, Cootehill, Co. Cavan (now residing at Dublin Road, Tuam, Co. Galway), has not been made.

The Deputy's question presumably refers to the application of Mr. Laurence O'Reilly, formerly of Market Street, Cootehill.

In accordance with the powers conferred upon me by Section 4 (1) of the Dáil Eireann Loans and Funds Act, 1924, I fixed the 30th April, 1929, as the final date for making applications for repayment in respect of sums subscribed to the Dáil Eireann (Internal) Loan. As Mr. Laurence O'Reilly's application was not received within the prescribed period I regret that I am unable to authorise repayment in respect of the sum which he claims to have subscribed.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state if he has in his Department a receipt for a subscription to the Dáil Eireann (Internal) Loan, 1919-1920, given by Eneas Lane, Ballycummane, Tournafulla, Co. Limerick, now resident at Ballylangan, Ballagh, Charleville, and, if so, will he state the reason for delay in paying this subscriber.

There is no trace in my Department of a receipt for a subscription to the Dáil Eireann (Internal) Loan, 1919-1920, by Mr. Eneas Lane, Ballycummane, Tournafulla, County Limerick, now resident at Ballylangan, Ballagh, Charleville. An application for repayment in respect of a sum of £1 subscribed to the Dáil Eireann (Internal) Loan, 1919-20, was, however, received from Aeneas Lane, of Ballylangan, Ballagh, Charleville, on the 3rd April, 1929. Mr. Lane gave his address on the date of subscribing as Cahirlevoy, Mount Collins, County Limerick. These particulars corresponded with those of an entry in the primary Register of subscribers and on the 28th June, 1929, authority to issue a Savings Certificate to Mr. Lane at his new address was given to the Accountant, Department of Posts and Telegraphs.

I am informed that the certificate was issued to Mr. Lane on the 1st July, 1929, and was acknowledged by him on the 6th idem. Mr. Lane has not yet, however, made application to the Department of Posts and Telegraphs for payment of the amount of the certificate.
