Vol. 37 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission and Westmeath Holding.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state why the Irish Land Commission have given notice to William Gilsenan, of Cooleighter, Drumcree, County Westmeath, that they will retain his holding consisting of 36 acres, 3 roods, approximately, under clause (c), Section 28 of the Land Act, 1923.

The Land Commission directed the retention on the Appointed Day of the holding of William Gilsenan, on the estate of H. M. Smyth, County Westmeath, in view of a claim made by the owner of the estate to have reserved to him a boat-house with right of way thereto, situate on the holding. When this claim has been investigated and disposed of, the Land Commission will re-sell the holding to William Gilsenan, who will not suffer any loss through its retention.

Does that mean that he will be provided with a holding elsewhere in exchange?

No, the holding will be re-sold to him. We have followed this procedure for the purpose of putting Gilsenan in the same position as other tenants on the estate. The holding is retained and he will pay a sum equivalent to his annuity for the present.
