Vol. 39 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Fruit Industry.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the importance of the raspberry growing industry to the Duleek-Julianstown area, County Meath; and, if so, what steps does he propose taking to develop that industry.

Mr. Hogan

I am aware that raspberry growing is carried out on a considerable scale in the Duleek-Julianstown area. The County Meath Committee of Agriculture, through the medium of schemes approved by the Department, have provided advice and instruction to growers, and have also laid down plots for the purpose of demonstrating the value of improved sorts and for the testing of new varieties of raspberries. I understand that there is a fruit growers' association in the district representing the majority of growers, and the Department is prepared to aid the association or individual growers in matters relating to the marketing of the crop.
