Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dormant Balances.

asked the Minister for Justice to state (1) the aggregate total amount, including accrued dividends, of the balances standing to credit of Suitors' Funds in Court and classified as dormant balances by the Accountant of the Courts of Justice; (2) to state when the last classification of balances under this head was made by the Accountant; (3) to state the aggregate total amount of these dormant balances at 31st March, 1923, and 31st March, 1914, respectively; (4) how much of these balances is held in cash and how much in securities; (5) in what securities are the balances invested, and the respective amounts invested in each; (6) by what officer are the dormant balances controlled; (7) whether the balances are subject to the audit of the Comptroller and Auditor-General; and (8) whether any of the dormant balances have been utilised for any purposes, and if so, to state the purposes.

(1) The aggregate total amount on 30th September, 1931, was £432,102 15s. 1d.

(2) The 30th September, 1931.

(3) The respective amounts are £354,393 3s. 0d., and £247,573 13s. 0d.

(4) & (5) As regards these questions, as there are a large number of figures, I Propose to have printed in the Official Report a statement giving the particulars asked for.

(6) The Dormant Blances are controlled by the Court.

(7) The answer is in the negative.

(8) Out of the General Cash Account of the Funds of Suitors a sum of £325,150 14s. 6d. cash was advanced from time under the authority of different Acts of the Parliament of Ireland and of the United Kingdom for such purposes as the building and improving of the Courts of Justice and Law Offices in Dublin, enlarging the Law Library, Housing of the Working Classes Acts, etc. As the Acts in question are numerous, I propose to have a list of them printed in the Official Report.
