Vol. 40 No. 16

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Purchase—Palmer Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state the number of years' purchase paid by the Congested Districts Board for the Palmer Estate, Co. Mayo, Record No. C.D.B. 9681, and whether in vesting the tenants any adjustments in the purchase arrangements were made by the Land Commission, and, if so, the nature of these adjustments.

It is not clear to what the Deputy refers. The number of years' purchase paid by the Congested Districts Board for the Palmer Estate in County Mayo as a whole has no necessary relation to the resale price of individual holdings, which depends on various factors, including rearrangements made prior to resale, improvements effected, etc., as well as the former rent (which differed widely according to the different tenures of holdings). Owing to the large number of tenants on the Palmer Estate and the comparatively small area of untenanted land, the rearrangement of many holding was necessary.

I was informed that the Congested Districts Board in purchasing this estate bought it at a different number of years' purchase for different parts of the estate—18 years, 15 years and 21 years' purchase. It was divided into three portions for valuation purposes. I was also informed that on the vesting of the estate by the Land Commission there would be a rearrangement at a flat rate of purchase.

There will be no interference with the number of years' purchase?

None whatever.
