Vol. 40 No. 16

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dáil Loan Claims.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of claims for Dáil Loan payments that do not appear to have been registered received from the old parliamentary divisions of West and South Cork, and the steps he proposes to take with a view to disposing satisfactorily of such cases, in many of which strong local evidence of payment is available and in some cases has been furnished to his Department.

The preparation in an exact form of the information asked for by the Deputy in the first part of the question would involve an amount of labour which, in my opinion, would not be justified. I may say, however, that only a very small proportion of the subscriptions received in the Dáil Eireann Department of Finance from the former parliamentary constituencies of West and South Cork has not been registered, but the applications which have been received in respect of the unregistered subscriptions appear to exceed the amount available.

With regard to the second part of the question, all claims in respect of which satisfactory evidence has been furnished are being dealt with as expeditiously as possible. In a number of cases the applicants have failed to substantiate their claims and accordingly I am not at present in a position to authorise repayment in respect of these. My Department is in communication with collectors and others with a view to obtaining reliable lists of subscribers.
