Vol. 41 No. 2

Vote 32—Gárda Síochána.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim bhreise ná raghaidh thar £29,200 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thoicfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1932, chun Turastail agus Costaisí an Ghárda Síochána (Uimh. 7 de 1925).

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £29,200 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1932, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Gárda Síochána (No. 7 of 1925).

This Vote is required to meet certain expenditure. There is expenditure arising out of the decision of the Executive Council in August, 1931, when they decided to increase the special detective division. In connection with that, I should say that there is a sum of £17,850 for the salaries of the additional Guards, and for the increments of those recruited to the special detective division. There were special increments given under Section 4 (d) of the Pay Order of 1927. As regards Sub-head E, we have £300 for clothing and equipment of the additional members. Expenditure was incurred in connection with the General Election, the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Northern Ireland, and the giving of special protection to members of the Oireachtas, and in that connection there is an additional sum of £3,500 required for subsistence allowances, and an additional sum of £2,100 for locomotion expenses. Additional motor transport had to be provided. There were two motor cars, two motor cycle combinations, and a certain number of Ford touring cars, the whole coming to an additional sum of £1,930. Additional arms and ammunition had to be purchased, and there was expenditure on the repair of arms and ammunition. I do not know if it is necessary to go into details of the purchases. There is a deficiency of £1,020 in respect of receipts by way of repayment of sums advanced to officers under sub-head H and proceeds of the sale of forfeited property and cast uniforms.

Vote agreed to.
