Vol. 42 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of the registered unemployed in the Saorstát at the latest date for which returns are available, and also the numbers for the nearest corresponding dates in the years 1930 and 1931; and if he will give an estimate of the number abnormally unemployed about the period in question in 1931 by reason of the building dispute.

The numbers of persons registered as unemployed on the 4th April, 1932, the latest date for which returns are available, and at the corresponding periods of the years 1930 and 1931 were as follows:—

4th April, 1932

31,374

7th April, 1931

25,427

7th April, 1930

22,623

In regard to the second part of the question, which alludes, presumably, to the dispute which took place in 1931 between the Dublin Master Builders' Association and the Building Trades Associations the number of workpeople involved in the dispute was about 4,413.
