Vol. 42 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cape Clear Telephone Service.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his attention has been called to the urgent need for the restoration of the telephone service formerly existing between the island of Cape Clear and the mainland; and if in view of the fact that there is no resident medical officer on the island and of the grave risk in life caused in the delay in procuring medical attendance, and of the serious handicap to the fishing industry, the main support of the inhabitants of the island, caused by the lack of information of the current prices of fish, he will have the telephone service restored without delay.

There was never a telephone or telegraph service between Cape Clear Island and the mainland. The question of providing communication was considered some years ago, but was found not to be feasible because, by reason of the heavy cost involved and the very limited revenue likely to be derived, the service would be unremunerative. I am, however, having the matter reviewed, and I will inform the Deputy of the result in due course.
