Vol. 42 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cement Factory for Clarecastle.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he has received representations from the Ennis Chamber of Commerce and the various local authorities in County Clare, as to the suitability of Clarecastle, Co. Clare, for the establishment of a cement factory, whether he has taken any steps in the matter by way of interesting business men and others in the project and whether he has had any enquiries as to suitable sites for the establishment of such factories in the Saorstát; and if he will take into consideration the desirability of relieving unemployment in the county when coming to decisions in such matters.

Representations have been made to my Department as to the suitability of areas in Clare and other counties for the establishment of a cement factory. The necessary materials for cement manufacture occur in different counties in the Saorstát and in considering the general question of a cement manufacturing industry the several areas in which raw materials are available are being borne in mind. The element of unemployment and other relevant factors will be kept in view.
