Vol. 42 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clay Pipe Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of establishments in the Saorstát engaged in the manufacture of clay pipes, the number of persons employed therein and the value of the annual production thereof; and if he will give the import figures of clay pipes for the three most recent years for which the records are available.

According to the Census of Production 1929 there were three establishments in the Saorstát engaged in the manufacture of clay tobacco pipes, the average number of persons employed was 11, excluding three proprietors engaged part time only. I feel that in the circumstances I would not be justified in disclosing the value of the production in 1929 as revealed by the Census. It is not possible to state the imports of clay tobacco pipes into the Saorstát, as this item does not constitute a specific heading in the Official Import List. Such imports would be included with pipes of other materials under the heading "pipes for smoking tobacco."
