Vol. 43 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Beara.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the people living in the Beara Peninsula are extremely hard hit owing to the failure of the fishing industry, the closing of the Allihies copper mines, and the stoppage of emigration, and if he is prepared owing to the exceptional circumstances existing to allocate a substantial grant for immediate works of relief in that area.

No special representations have been received in my Department nor, so far as can be ascertained, in any other Department of State regarding conditions in the Beara Peninsula. Steps are being taken, however, to have a local inspection made by an Inspector of the Department of Local Government and Public Health. The allocation of a grant for expenditure in the area will receive consideration in connection with the general allocation of grants out of monies available for the relief of unemployment.
