Vol. 43 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Turf at the Curragh Camp.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that his Department has made an offer of 16/-per ton for black turf, delivered Curragh Camp, to owners of turf in County Kildare, and whether, in view of the fact that the owners of turf in this county receive 18/- per ton for black turf bought on the turf banks, he will consider giving the owners a better price than that offered.

It has been intimated to intending suppliers that my Department is prepared to accept up to 2,000 tons of black turf at a price not exceeding 16/- per ton delivered at the Curragh Camp. I am aware that the use of turf presents considerable difficulties to the Military authorities in handling and storage. The idea of burning turf was conceived with a view to the creation of employment and the distribution of money in a district where it was badly needed, and it was not adopted with a view to a saving of money on the Army Vote. At a figure exceeding 16/- per ton it would be an uneconomic proposition.

Would the Minister be prepared to receive some information with regard to the cost of living there which is exceedingly high?

We have already had inquiries made. Deputy Harris brought the matter before me some time ago and we found recently that turf could be obtained much cheaper than the Deputy suggested.
