Vol. 43 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick County Borough Poor Law Administration.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state when proposals for legislation will be introduced to provide that Limerick City will be placed in a similar position to other county boroughs in regard to poor law administration and charges.

The poor law authority in Limerick County Borough is bound by the same code of law relating to the administration of public assistance as are the poor law authorities in the County Boroughs of Cork and Waterford. In the latter cases, however, the city areas are united with the surrounding rural districts for the assessment of rates in respect of poor law charges. These arrangements were made when the local county schemes came into effect, having been sanctioned by a measure of local agreement at the time.

An amendment of the Limerick county schemes to effect a similar re-adjustment of poor law areas of charge would, however, require very careful consideration and I would be reluctant to review the existing arrangements in the absence of agreed local proposals on the matter.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in the County Waterford the local authorities have always protested and they have definitely indicated their objection to being joined with the County Borough?
