Vol. 44 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployed Tradesmen in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he would state the numbers unemployed in the city and county of Dublin on the 1st of October last (or nearest date) and also on the corresponding date in 1931, in the following trades:—Carpenters, bricklayers, stonecutters, plasterers, painters, plumbers and builders' labourers?

The numbers of persons in the trades mentioned registered as unemployed at Employment Exchanges in the area of Dublin City and County on the 2nd October, 1932, and the 4th October, 1931 (being the dates nearest to those mentioned in the question for which figures are available) are as follows:—

2nd Oct., 1932.

4th Oct., 1931.

Carpenters

320

170

Bricklayers

41

82

Stonecutters and Masons

54

19

Plasterers

78

48

Painters

363

165

Plumbers

Does the Minister still adhere to the statement made quite recently, that the numbers of unemployed at present are not in excess of what they were 12 months ago?

The answer which I have just given has no relation to that statement at all.

The Minister made a statement here during the last couple of weeks.

Which is quite true. I ask the Deputy to bear that in mind when examining these figures.

They are both true.
