Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 1 Dec 1932

Vol. 45 No. 5

Sittings of the Dáil.

I move:

"That the Orders of the day (other than Orders of the day relative to Private Deputies business) appointed for consideration on Wednesday, December 7th, 1932, be set down for consideration on Tuesday, December 6th, 1932."

As Deputies are aware, Thursday is a Church holiday and the Dáil will not be meeting on that day. It is proposed to meet on Tuesday instead, and this is to provide that the Orders put down for Wednesday will be available for consideration on Tuesday.

Private members' business?

Business other than private members' business.

Is private members' business to be taken on Tuesday?

The business down for Wednesday then is being put down for Tuesday. Is that the regular procedure or is it by the grace of the House the Minister is moving it?

I do not know. That is a matter for the Ceann Comhairle.

By the grace of the House.

Will the Minister tell us, as there was some doubt about it, what days the House will sit on next week? I understood that the House was to sit on Tuesday and Wednesday and not on Thursday and Friday.

The House will sit on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is proposed, if business will permit, to adjourn over Christmas on Wednesday evening, but if business does not permit the Dáil will resume on Friday.

When is it proposed to move the adjournment?

On Wednesday if business will permit.

At what hour? There is usually a motion on the adjournment.

When the business has been completed.

That is not the practice. The Minister has forgotten all the lessons he learned in the last five years.

In view of the traditions to which the Deputy has referred, I suggest that the matter can be arranged between the Whips.

Is it proposed to adjourn over Christmas next Wednesday if the business is finished?

Yes, but circumstances may arise which will not permit of that.

What about the date of re-assembly?

That cannot be fixed yet.

Will the Minister know next week?

Question put and agreed to.
The Dáil adjourned at 8.45 p.m. until Tuesday, December 6th, at 3 p.m.
