Vol. 46 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage Work (Mayo-Sligo).

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that considerable damage is done by the flooding of what are known as the Mullaghanoe and Black Rivers on the Sligo-Mayo border and that for many years crops have been destroyed annually, and if, in view of this, he will have moneys out of the Relief Votes allocated for the drainage of those rivers, which would also give much-needed work in that congested area.

There is no record of an application having been made for an allocation from the Vote for minor relief works for the drainage of the Mullaghanoe and Black Rivers. The Vote is now exhausted. Drainage works are by their nature unsuitable for execution in the winter months when works for relief of unemployment are most needed. The question of the drainage of these rivers has been under consideration in connection with a comprehensive scheme for the drainage of the River Moy and its tributaries, details of which have been submitted to the Sligo and Mayo County Councils.
