Vol. 47 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Relief Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if any decision has yet been arrived at concerning the recent application of the Dublin Corporation for a grant of £105,000, to enable it to complete its relief schemes, and so provide much needed work for the unemployed of the city; and if he is aware that the Corporation have guaranteed to provide, out of rates, the materials to the sum of £40,000 for the utilisation of the £105,000 grant, all of which will be paid in wages.

I have been in communication with the Dublin Corporation on this matter and have had opportunity during the present week of discussing with the Lord Mayor and members of the Corporation projects for the relief of unemployment. As intimated to them, I am not in a position at the moment to indicate what further moneys will be available from State sources.

Is the Minister aware that at present a large number of men are engaged at relief work and that they will be let go very soon on the completion of the work? Would he take what steps he can to expedite any decision he is to come to in the matter?

I am fully aware of that.
