Vol. 47 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coastal Patrol Service.

Mr. Lynch

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether any proposals have been considered for adding further vessels to the coastal patrol service to supplement the work of the Muirchú; and, if so, what these proposals were and what was the estimated cost to the State?

The question of providing additional protection has been considered, and action has been postponed until the necessary powers have been obtained to enforce the laws relating to our exclusive fishery areas.

Mr. Lynch

I have asked whether any proposals have been considered for adding further vessels to the coastal patrol service and, if so, what these proposals were. Can the Parliamentary Secretary say what they were?

The proposals were in connection with the provision of additional boats for the protection of the fisheries.

Mr. Lynch

What kind of boats?

Motor boats.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state if there has been any consideration given to the question of seeking from the Dáil powers to deal with trawlers with which the Ministry have no power to deal at the present time?

It is hoped in the near future to introduce legislation bearing on the subject.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the President made the same answer 12 months ago?
