Vol. 47 No. 17

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Grants to Cavan.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is in a position to state (a) the number of applications from County Cavan made to his Department for grants under the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1932, and (b) the number of grants actually allocated in that county.

The number of applications to date made to the Department is 462 in respect of both new and reconstructed houses. Grants have been allocated in 80 cases.

Is the Minister aware that some of these applications in Cavan have been in for almost a year and that unless the grants are allocated at once, especially in the matter of reconstruction of houses, it will mean a delay of a year in getting through the work? Will the Minister see that by the middle of next month these grants will be allocated?

May I ask the Minister will he, in the event of so many cases being refused——

It does not necessarily mean that the cases have been refused. But there has been a delay in the inspection until recently. In the last couple of weeks the staff of inspectors has been doubled and we are hoping to get on with the work much more quickly now.
