Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bent Grass Experiments at Horn Head (County Donegal).

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that at Horn Head, Donegal, owing to the action of the winds the sand is gradually drifting inland and covering the adjoining lands with sand and rendering the houses unfit for habitation and the lands unfit for cultivation, and whether any experiments have been carried out in the planting of bent grass, and, if so, whether steps will be taken to have this area planted with this grass.

The question of the damage to agricultural land caused by blowing sand in the Horn Head area of County Donegal and elsewhere has occupied the attention of the Land Commission for some time past, but the subject is one of great difficulty, and experimental work is being carried out before undertaking large commitments.

Following on a recent report by an inspector on lands in the Horn Head area affected by the accumulation of drifting sand, the Land Commission have decided to take steps to acquire lands necessary for the plantation of bent grass and for other measures to deal with the menace of blowing sand in the district.
