Vol. 48 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief Cost in Dublin Union.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that there is a steady increase of admission of "Casuals" to the Dublin Board of Assistance, averaging 25 daily; that these "Casuals" are mostly young men of the ages of 15 and 25 years, and whether having regard to the enormous cost of relief he intends to take any steps to alleviate the increasing cost in the Dublin Union Area.

The general question of the cost of relief in the Dublin Union was fully discussed with a deputation from the Dublin Board of Assistance on the 9th March last. The members of the deputation were informed that the State could not be expected to assume any financial responsibility in this matter. There is nothing to add at present to the outcome of these discussions.

Arising out of the answer of the Parliamentary Secretary, may I ask if he would recommend the Minister, when he is considering the question of the allocation of grants, to give special consideration to the claims of Dublin, having regard to the special circumstances arising, as stated in the question?

Well, it is no harm to put it before him.

I suppose I may take this to mean that putting it before the Minister will have no results?
