Vol. 49 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cashel Housing Contract.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that a dispute on a housing contract has been proceeding in Cashel for almost three months, where the local union are demanding 9d per hour for labourers and 1/7 per hour for tradesmen, and that the contractor has refused to pay more than at the rate of 30/- per week; if he will state whether the conditions of Section 8 of the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932, are being complied with in the circumstances.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. I am at present having investigations made with a view to ascertaining whether the provisions of Section 8 of the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932, are proposed to be observed in the carrying out of this contract.

In view of the fact that this contract for the building of houses has been held up for a considerable time will the Minister undertake to have an inquiry made into the matter immediately?

This is the first time the dispute was brought to my notice. I was not aware of it until the Deputy put down the question. I shall have the matter investigated immediately.
