Vol. 49 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Emergency Duties.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what is the total amount collected—up to the latest available date—through the emergency duties imposed in retaliation for the British special duties imposed on Free State produce, as distinct from the ordinary customs duties for protection or revenue purposes.

It is not desirable, in the public interest, to give the information asked for by the Deputy.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, and in view of the statement of the Minister for Industry and Commerce in the Seanad, that the Irish Government were willing to withdraw these emergency duties if the British were willing to withdraw their special duties against us, would the Minister state whether he is aware of the relative value of these respective duties?

I should require notice of that.
