Vol. 49 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade With Latvia.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what are the principal categories of the articles imported into the Saorstát from Latvia to the amount of £19,255 in July, 1933; and what are the main classes of goods imported by Latvia, and if these latter goods are subject to tariff duties on entry into Latvia.

The following are the principal classes of goods imported from Latvia during July, 1933:

Wood and timber and manufactures

£19,218

Packing and wrapping paper

£37

Total

£19,255

The exports consigned from the Saorstát to Latvia during the first seven months in this year were: horses, £120, and small items by parcel post amounting to £6. The rate of duty applicable to horses is 60 lats per head, i.e., about £3 15s. at current exchange rate.

I asked a wider question than what has been replied to. I asked what are the main classes of goods imported by Latvia.

The furnishing of an answer to that question would involve an examination of Latvian statistics which could not have been undertaken in the time at our disposal. I doubt if it could be undertaken except with considerable difficulty. The information available from an examination of the statistics is hardly information which should be furnished in reply to a Parliamentary question. If the Deputy requires the information, I have no objection to an investigation being carried out and the information sent to him.

I was merely endeavouring to assist the Government in their search for alternative markets. I thought we might get a spot of butter into Latvia.

Will the Minister say if Mr. McEniry's cattle were sent to Latvia?
