Vol. 50 No. 4

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Newspaper Report of Alleged Ill-treatment

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been directed to the published statement of a man named O'Connor, of Innishannon, in the Southern Star of 4th November last, alleging ill-treatment by supposed members of the Young Ireland Association; if this statement was thoroughly sifted by the police authorities, and, if so, whether any corroboration or foundation for O'Connor's statement was found, and, if not, whether it is intended to take proceedings against O'Connor for fabricating such a statement.

I have seen the publication referred to. The police have made inquiries but are not at present in a position to prosecute anybody in connection with the matter.

Are they still pursuing inquiries in this matter?

So it is not yet ended?

Something may yet be done?

Does the Minister for Justice accept the principle that criminal libel ought to be punished?
