Vol. 51 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Gorey.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the fact that the number of unemployed workers in Gorey has reached a high total never touched before as shown by registrations at the local labour exchange, he will make an allocation from the Relief Schemes Vote to enable work of public utility to be started in that town which would relieve distress amongst the unemployed there.

The present increase in registration at unemployment exchanges is regarded as being due to expectation of benefit under the Unemployment Assistance Act. It is not proposed to make any special allocation from the Relief Schemes Vote for the provision of works for the relief of unemployment in Gorey.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is the Minister aware that two years ago there were not 100 unemployed registered in Gorey area? To-day there are over 450 registered unemployed. Surely something should be done for their relief.

I am not aware if the facts are as stated by Deputy Keating. If they are as stated by him, I have no doubt that the reason why the unemployed did not register in 1930-31 was that they knew it was hopeless.

I have information that several people got tired registering in the Gorey district——

In 1930-31?

At the present moment. If the Minister does not know that he will get the information if he looks for it.
