Vol. 51 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Barytes Deposits.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will consider the question of having the barytes deposits at Muckross, Clonakilty, examined by an expert with a view to the reopening of these mines, which heretofore gave lucrative and much needed employment to local workers.

Geological examination of the Muckross barytes lode was made by the Geological Survey in 1919, which, I am advised, suggested the existence of a considerable body of barytes there. The development of the deposits is a matter primarily for private enterprise, and if the Deputy is aware of any group or groups in a position to undertake effectively the reopening of the mines, I will be glad to provide every assistance within my power to further the matter.
