Vol. 51 No. 15

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killybegs Water Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that the contractor for the Killybegs water scheme is only paying a total wage of 22/- for a 50-hour week; that the prevailing local wage is the county council rate of 26/-; that some of the men engaged on this scheme have to walk a distance of four miles each way to their work; whether a grant has been given by his Department for this work, and, if so, how much, and whether action will be taken to ensure that the weekly wage of these men will be increased to 26/- per week.

Following representations from Deputies I have made inquiries in this matter and I have been informed that the Donegal Board of Health at their meeting on Monday last instructed their engineer to interview the contractor for the Killybegs waterworks scheme, and that as a result the contractor is paying a wage of 26/- a week. A grant has been made available for the work in conjunction with the Carndonagh sewerage scheme, subject to a total maximum allocation of £4,700 for both schemes.
