Vol. 51 No. 18

The Attorney-General and Questions.

I would respectfully ask your ruling, a Chinn Chomhairle, in reference to an answer given by the Minister for Justice to question No. 9 on the Order Paper. Heretofore, in this House, the practice was that some questions concerning the Attorney-General's Department were put to the Minister for Justice. This afternoon the Minister for Justice refused to answer the second part of question No. 9 on the ground that the matter was not in his Department. I respectfully ask you, Sir, what is the proper Department, in future, to be questioned in relation to the duties of the Attorney-General?

The Deputy will understand that a question of that nature ought not to be put without notice. I shall look up the matter and meet the Deputy.

I apologise to the Chair. I was taking the first opportunity of raising the matter.

The Deputy ought to know.

I know what my own practice was, but I am sorry that the present Minister for Justice does not seem to have that confidence in his Attorney-General that my predecessors and I had in ours.
