Vol. 52 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Excess Customs Revenue.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the fact that the total revenue received from customs duties for the year 1933-34 was £1,500,000 in excess of the estimated amount indicated in the explanatory balance sheet circulated on the occasion of last year's Budget, he will state what were the articles in respect of which the increase was mainly realised and the excess amount received in respect of each such article.

In my Budget statement I gave details of a number of items in respect of which the yield from Customs Duties exceeded the Estimates. The principal individual items of Customs receipts to which I did not specifically refer in my statement, and the amounts by which the yield in each case exceeded the Estimate were:—Clothing and Apparel (£322,000); Boots and Shoes (£160,000); Beer (£61,000); Woven Tissues (£57,000); Tobacco (£36,000); and Coal (£26,000). The balance is accounted for by other items which do not individually show an excess of over £25,000 on the Estimate.

The balance being approximately £500,000?

I am not accepting the accuracy of the Deputy's calculation.

Surely you can add up?

But can the Deputy? That is the question.
